Who are the Beantown Jumpers?
We are a competitive Double Dutch team from Boston, Milton, Quincy, Pembroke and Scituate. Our team members include girls & boys who are in Grade 2 through high school. Our mission is to share the sport of Double Dutch with others while encouraging physical activity, teamwork and fun. In conjunction with the Red Auerbach Youth Foundation we believe in the value of sports and athletics to the healthy development, both physical and emotional, of children.
What’s a Demonstration/Workshop like?
We conduct fund-raising demonstrations and workshops. We also perform at birthday parties and fairs. Each event is a lot of energetic fun for everyone! The team will perform a “Fusion” music presentation and then they will demonstrate the jumping styles necessary for competitions, including speed (2 minutes), compulsory (25 second dance routine) and a free-style (tricks) routine (1 minute). After the presentation, group participation with the team is encouraged. We will teach you how to jump in, turn the ropes and share some of our jump rope tricks!
Why are the Beantown Jumpers raising money?
The practices train the jumpers for yearly tournaments. The Red Auerbach Youth Foundation Tournament is Saturday, April 4, 2015 which will be the State qualifier for a National Invitation based on a teams scores and coaches recommendations.
Beantown has competed at the National level four times. In 2009, the AJA Diamonds, a fifth grade singles team placed fifth. In 2010, the DJ's, fifth grade singles team, placed sixth. In 2012, Bombsquad, seventh grade doubles team, placed third. The Bombsquad score was the highest for Massachusetts as a team. Their Freestyle score was the highest for the competition in all divisions! In 2014, the eighth grade team placed third in the singles division.
Who coaches the Beantown Jumpers?
Coach Patti Travers is the Wellness Director and Physical Education Specialist at Quincy Catholic Academy. Patti coaches at each program along with a tremendous group of volunteer parents of girls and boys who jump in the program. The parents are trained alongside Patti, as well as the jumpers, learning the ins and outs of the ropes.
